What Is Jurisprudence?
By The James Wilson Institute • Posted on Aug 16 2025

In this video for the Federalist Society’s No. 86 series, JWI Founder and Director Hadley Arkes explains the meaning of jurisprudence and how it ties into natural law. He describes each of the different aspects of sound jurisprudence, then follows his description with the historical example of Abraham Lincoln’s argument against slavery. Although many who listened to Lincoln’s argument did not possess much education, they could still understand his jurisprudential argument because it invoked truths common to all humanity.
